چکیده

Title of Document: INDIVIDUAL AND POPULATION-LEVEL EFFECTS OF SOLID COAL COMBUSTION RESIDUE ON THE ESTUARINE GRASS SHRIMP (PALAEMONETES PUGIO) Danika M. Kuzmick, Master of Science, 2006 Directed By: Dr. Christopher Rowe, Department of Marine Estuarine and Environmental Science Burning coal for electricity produces solid coal combustion residue (CCR), which is rich in potentially toxic trace elements, and is frequently discharged into natural and man-made aquatic systems as a method of disposal. Lethal and sublethal effects of CCR on the estuarine grass shrimp, Palaemonetes pugio, were assessed. Grass shrimp were exposed in the laboratory to CCR-enriched sediments and food over a full life cycle. Grass shrimp exposed to CCR significantly accumulated selenium and cadmium. Chronic CCR-exposure caused significantly decreased larval survival, increased time to metamorphosis, and increased DNA strand breaks in shrimp compared to non-exposed conditions. Stage-classified matrix population models were constructed to assess the population-level effects of CCR on grass shrimp. The population models suggested that CCR-exposed grass shrimp would experience a decreased population growth rate, altered stable stage structure, stagespecific reproductive value, and elasticity patterns relative to shrimp in reference conditions.

Effects of cyclic hypoxia on gene expression and reproduction in a grass shrimp, Palaemonetes pugio.

Cyclic changes in dissolved oxygen occur naturally in shallow estuarine systems, yet little is known about the adaptations and responses of estuarine organisms to cyclic hypoxia. Here we examine the responses of Palaemonetes pugio, a species of grass shrimp, to cyclic hypoxia (1.5-8 mg/l dissolved oxygen; 4.20-22.42 kPa) at both the molecular and organismal levels. We measured alterations in ge...

Long-term pyrene exposure of grass shrimp, Palaemonetes pugio, affects molting and reproduction of exposed males and offspring of exposed females.

The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of long-term pyrene exposure on molting and reproduction in the model estuarine invertebrate, the grass shrimp (Palaemonetes pugio). Grass shrimp were exposed to measured concentrations of 5.1, 15.0, and 63. 4 ppb (microg/L) pyrene for 6 weeks, during which time we determined molting and survivorship. At the end of the exposure, we immed...

Acute toxic effects of endosulfan sulfate on three life stages of grass shrimp, Palaemonetes pugio.

In this study, the toxicity of endosulfan sulfate, the primary degradation product of the insecticide endosulfan, was determined in three life stages of the grass shrimp (Palaemonetes pugio). After 96 h exposure to endosulfan sulfate, the grass shrimp adult LC50 was 0.86 microg/L (95% CI 0.56-1.31), the grass shrimp larvae LC50 was 1.64 microg/L (95% CI 1.09-2.47) and the grass shrimp embryo LC...

Influence of salinity on the bioaccumulation and photoinduced toxicity of fluoranthene to an estuarine shrimp and oligochaete.

The effect of salinity on the photoinduced toxicity of waterborne fluoranthene to larvae of the grass shrimp (Palaemonetes pugio) and tubificid oligochaete worms (Monopylephorus rubroniveus) was studied in a laboratory system under simulated sunlight. In the grass shrimp toxicity tests, five concentrations of fluoranthene (0, 3.6, 7.3, 13.8, and 29.0 microg/L) and four salinities (6.9, 14.5, 21...
